Making Wall Plaques

Stepping stone molds can be used to create beautiful wall plaques for either indoors or outdoors. For indoor plaques, you can use plaster instead of concrete.

  1. First create a hanger for the plaque by bending sturdy wire (a coat hanger works, as does aluminum clothes hanger line, found in hardware stores) in the center to form a "V" shape. Use approximately 12"-16" of wire for stepping stone-sized plaques and 6"-8" for garden totems. With pliers, bend an inch or so of the "V" forward so that it sits at a 90 degree angle relative to the rest of the wire. Now curl the ends of the wire into two loops.
  2. If there's a certain location at which you wish to position the hanger, mark that position on the lip of the mold before pouring concrete.

  3. Pour 1/4" to 1/2" plaster or concrete into the mold. Shake to remove air bubbles. Then add more concrete (or plaster) to make a total depth of approximately 3/4" to 1". Set the hanger into the wet concrete, making sure the V tab is sticking up out of the concrete.
  4. Allow to harden 2 days before demolding, then cure another week before hanging plaques.
